Default How To: Make Your Own Short Shifter

heres a video of the finished product: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKC2W6EE6xk

this is a really easy thing to do all you need is:

* stock shifter
* welder
* basic hand tools

disclaimer: i am not responsible for any damages to your car from this modification, only attempt if you are confident in your welding skills. also always measure your shifter to exhaust clearance before extending the bottom. most cars can handle an inch some more, but check before welding.

first you need to decide how much you want to shorten the hight of the actual shift knob, in my case it was 2 inches. so you take your stock shifter and cut it off right above the pivot ball. then cut out the desired abount from the shifter, but keep the part u cut out for later.

then just weld the shortened shifter back onto the pivot ball.

now that we have shortened the hight, lets shorten the throw:

you will now need to cut the bottom off right below the pivot ball.

then take the piece that we cut out earlier, and cut it down to an inch if not already.

then weld the bottom back on with the 1 inch extension. (make sure you line up the bottom side to side with the bend on the top part pointing back.)

then just blast it with some paint and reassemble and you now have about a 25-35% shorter throw and a shorter shifter to go with it. its fully customizeable to your liking.

Yea but people that have a welder can build there own in about 10 minutes and have nothing in it. Also, why paint your own car, or do your own swap, or anything for that matter when you can pay someone. Its called a do it yourself type of person. Try it sometime, its pretty fun.

If anyone in the RTP area wants one of these I can do it for 20! Custom made to your liking. Hight and throw. Custom is way more fun than bought Imo. Unless I get lazy

this is true. a friend of mine has an ef with one of these. this kids throw is probably 60% shorter than factory and it has probably 1/8th inch from neutral to all gears. it clicks in and out. its so easy to get use to. i wish i had a customed one it honestly is way better than the b&m i bought from phantasm...
